Boston’s well-known livestock auctioneer Ben Killingworth is seen briefly.
754 AIM HIGH
Louth 1966–70
36.25 min Colour Standard 8mm Sound
Featuring the 1228 (Louth) Squadron of the Air Training Corps, the film presents a detailed and absorbing picture of the numerous different training exercises and other activities carried out by the teenage cadets. They receive technical instruction in such varied subjects as aero engines, the rifle range, and radio communications including the use of walkie-talkies. After parachute drill and extensive briefing they can take to the air – as passengers of course – in planes, helicopters and gliders. Eventually perhaps, if they show exceptional ability, they may even progress to actual pilot training. Exercises in the field include map reading, patrols in enemy territory, initiative tests (how can you get a stretcher case safely across a river?), and even, with the inclement weather adding an unexpected degree of authenticity, Arctic Survival. Some good old fashioned square bashing prepares them for the annual Wing Parade and twice-yearly inspections, but there are plenty of more informal activities including aircraft modelling, visits to Air Shows, and sporting events such as Cyclocross. Certain administrative tasks are carried out by adult officers or the civilian committee, but cadets are encouraged to take on as much responsibility as possible, and it is they who write and publish the Squadron’s quarterly Newsletter, which goes out to over four hundred past members world wide. They like to keep in touch, we’re told; and after watching this film, you’ll understand why.
755 AIM HIGH – OUT-TAKES
Louth 1966–70
25.5 min Colour Standard 8mm Silent
Apart from a visit to the Waddington Air Show which never made it to the final cut, this roll consists entirely of good unused material from various sequences in Acc No 754. So in one sense it is virtually superfluous. However, should the need arise, it would be perfectly possible to reunite the used and unused scenes, re-editing them in a way that would better suit some present day purpose. Prospective users may therefore find it useful to review this roll in addition to Acc No 754.
756 THE LOCAL – WHITE HORSE INN
Louth c 1967
12 min Colour Standard 8mm Silent
An affectionate portrait of Louth’s White Horse Inn, its landlord, and its regulars. Of particular interest are scenes of barrels, bottles and kegs being delivered, and of the landlord’s work in the cellar, where he is busy tapping a new barrel. Upstairs again, there are convivial scenes in the bar with pints being pulled and shorts measured out whilst dominoes and shove-halfpenny provide some traditional entertainment. Finally, after time has been called, the landlord washes the glasses, empties the ashtrays, and locks up for the night.
