Fiction film by Spalding Gleed Boys' School. The school swimming champion loses his nerve, but regains it when faced with an apparent drowning emergency - which, of course, his friends have deliberately staged for his benefit. Of considerable archival interest for its scenes at the long-demolished Spalding open-air pool, and numerous other locations.

Boys from the Gleed School are seen building the framework of their Tulip Parade float round an old car, padding it with straw, pinning on the tulip heads, and, finally, taking part in the Parade.

224 THE FISHERMEN OF ENGLAND

A fiction film by Spalding Gleed Boys' School. The story, about a fishing contest between two rival groups of boys, is far from compelling, but school/street/river locations are of some archival interest.

225 LORD TRENT OPENS FIRE TRAINING SCHOOL

The official opening (good views of Lord Trent and other local dignitaries) is followed by a display of marching, physical fitness, and some elaborate training exercises using all the latest equipment - rescues from a scaffolding tower, deployment of multiple hoses, the use of breathing apparatus, etc. The film concludes with a parade of current and former fire-fighting vehicles.

An exercise in which skilled trainees (A.F.S.?) erect a pipe-bridge to carry the water supply over a road.

Various unidentified men demonstrate golf swings, with and without ball. Exterior location, possibly golf-links. Shots are separated by short spacers.

228 LORRY CRASH AT METHERINGHAM

TV news footage. Roadside location outside the village itself. Firemen and Ambulance men at crash scene, rescuing driver. Print of transmitted item, plus unused camera out-takes. Of interest for methods, equipment in use, etc.

229 MALTINGS FIRE, SLEAFORD

TV news footage. Interviews to camera, both on site during the fire (fire officers, owners of lost goods, etc) and afterwards in the Carre Arms as locals assess the extent of the destruction.

230 OPENING OF MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS, BOSTON

Local dignitaries and their wives, together with distinguished visitors including the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, arrive in a procession of horse-drawn carriages. The Mayor of Boston, Alderman Joseph Cooke, opens the gates of the new building with a special presentation key. Astounding dresses and hats. Currently the oldest film in the Archive, and believed to be the earliest surviving film taken in Lincolnshire.

War-time propaganda short about life in a typical English country town, never named, but actually Boston. Of outstanding local interest for its locations, the film's attitudes and assumptions are nowadays no less striking - e.g. the proud boast that most local schoolchildren know how to use a telephone kiosk.

232 FARMING IN HOLBEACH

Thistle cutting; Percheron horses; greenhouses; harvesting and threshing; ditching; spraying potato tops with sulphuric acid(!). Also, a few skating scenes on Cowbit Wash.

Greenhouse scenes, with forced daffodils and tulips; then tulip fields, with many female workers wearing traditional Lincolnshire bonnets. Cultivation methods, and the actual varieties grown, are of considerable archival interest to horticulturalists.

Detailed sequence showing cutting, raking, carting, and the building up of the silage clamp. Horses pull fresh cartloads up the side of the stack and each layer is spread with molasses from a watering can.

Village scenes, 1950 (B/W), followed by succession of fetes to raise money for new hall. Occasional other items, notably, repairs being made to river bank to avert flooding. Fete material (somewhat repetitive) varies in quality and interest, but includes useful and unusual material.
