8.5 min B/W Silent 16mm from 35mm

130 WE CHOSE SKEGNESS

131 CLEANER FIELDS - GREATER YIELDS
Boston & District 1952
12.5 min B/W Sound 16mm
A promotional film for Hardy & Collins on state-of-the-art crop-spraying both from the ground and the air. Good aerial views of Boston, and some excellent agricultural scenes, though the advice (e.g. to spray DDT and Nicotine) is hilariously outdated.

132 A BOSTON STORY
Boston 1951
16.5 min B/W Sound 16mm
An American visits the Festival of Britain in London, then goes on to attend the Festival celebrations in Boston. There are many individual sequences of archival interest, notably a children's massed gym display, a Pageant, motor cycle racing, the May Fair, and an aerial display including stunts and the latest Gloster Meteor jet.

Dramatic footage showing the damage to houses and sea defences caused by the storm of January 1953, and work in progress on repairs, mostly lorries dumping slag to fill the gaps. (Note: part of the film was shot at silent speed, part at sound speed.)

138 PLANES
Humberston 1931
3 min B/W Silent 16mm
Various planes stationary on the sands, being manoeuvred into position, and taking off. A parachutist jumps from one of the planes and is picked up by a recovery vehicle. The planes seen include a de Haviland Puss Moth, Spartan biplane, Robinson Redwing, Blackburn Bluebird and Blackburn Lincock.

139 BEACH SCENES
Sutton, Mablethorpe 1929/30
4 min B/W Silent 16mm
Family scenes of considerable social interest, especially for what now seems absurdly inappropriate costume, e.g. women in town outfits and baby in sand pit wearing a lace edged dress.

140 FLOWERS OF THE FENS
Spalding 1935
11 min B/W Silent 16mm
The growing of flowers under glass and in the fields; the packing and despatch of cut flowers to market; the ploughing out and cleaning of bulbs. A revealing insight into the bulb industry of the 1930s, hugely labour-intensive, and in striking contrast with modern practices.
