Itinerant tradesman whose grindstone is mounted on his bicycle and driven by the pedals. He is seen sharpening a kitchen knife in the street outside the owner's house.

146 VISIT TO HULL

The "boat train" leaves New Holland station, and the paddle-steamer Killingholme approaches. After scenes on board, the passengers are shown disembarking at Hull, and a few scenes in the town follow. (Many of these locations have now changed almost beyond recognition, owing to wartime damage and rebuilding.)

The Gyrotiller, an early form of mechanical cultivator, ran on tracks and had two sets of rotating blades at the rear. The construction and method of working are clearly seen.

Two men working at an old-fashioned ropewalk. All the various processes are seen, from hackling (combing out the fibres), spinning and twisting, to sizing and topping (forming the actual rope from the previously spun strands).

Masons are seen at work cutting and shaping the stone, which is hoisted aloft by hand-operated cranes. Workmen, filmed from up on the scaffolding, are seen removing damaged stonework and replacing it with new. The film includes panoramic views of the town taken from high up the spire.
