803 WE BUILD A HOUSE
Spilsby 1950
17 min B/W 16mm Silent
Wonderfully evocative footage of house building at a time when workmen nonchalantly climbed tall ladders balancing loads of bricks, mortar or tiles on their heads, and everything necessary was made on site by hand. No prefabricated parts brought in on lorries, and no machinery available apart from a concrete mixer. As the building grows, we see bricklayers, plumbers, tilers, glaziers, electricians, carpenters, painters, each making their particular contributions to the final result. And there’s a curious little surprise to finish with. It isn’t Mum making the curtains with a hand-turned sewing machine. It’s Dad.

804 BEACH SCENES
Ingoldmells & Chapel St Leonard c 1949
1 min Colour 16mm Silent
Donkey rides, children happily splashing about in the sea whilst the adults paddle decorously with their skirts tucked up between their legs. It is noticeable that most people still dressed in their best to go to the beach, rather than choosing casual wear.

805 SPILSBY SHOW & BEAUTY PARADE
Spilsby c 1949
1.5 min B/W 16mm Silent
Donkey rides, a dog show, and a rather prim and proper beauty parade. There are also tantalising glimpses of a hog roast, a stationary bicycle on rollers driving a huge speedometer dial, and what looks like an early knitting machine.

806 LINCOLN MODEL STEAM CLUB
Lincoln c 1949
0.5 min B/W 16mm Silent
Brief scenes of a model traction engine and a narrow gauge model steam train with children seated astride the coaches at the back.

807 SPORTS DAY AT ST PAULS (SCHOOL)
Burgh le Marsh 1950
2 min B/W 16mm Silent
Running races and high jump at a girls’ school. Hatted ladies make speeches, and have tea served to them on the terrace. For everyone else there is an ice cream and soft drinks stall. Some of the younger girls perform various dances on a small stage.

808 VISIT TO THE SOUTH BANK EXHIBITION
Horncastle area & London 1951
9.5 min B/W & Colour 16mm Silent
Groups from Firsby, Eastville, and Horncastle meet up at Boston after journeys on local trains, and set off together for Kings Cross. These railway scenes are full of interest. We then see the party at the exhibition site and later at the Battersea Fun Fair. Apart from the Skylon and the Lion & Unicorn Pavilion we see little of the exhibition itself.

809 POLLING DAY
Horncastle 1951
2.25 min B/W 16mm Silent
There were two General Elections in 1951. This was the second, held in October. Of particular interest is the announcement of the result, presumably on the following day. A small crowd gathers in the street, and the returning officer appears at an upstairs window, shouting out the figures* without the help of a microphone. He is followed briefly by the winning and losing candidates. The winner then moves amongst the crowd, receiving congratulations.
*JFW Maitland (Con) 22,043. FH Clark (Lab) 11,143. 76% turnout.

810 POINT TO POINT
Manthorpe? 1952
2 min Colour 16mm Silent
Lively footage showing the crowds, the bookmakers, and several races.

811 PETERBOROUGH SHOW
Peterborough 1952
0.75 min B/W 16mm Silent
A few brief scenes of people on horseback, possibly prior to the Show itself.

812 SPILSBY SHOW
Spilsby 1952
2.75 min B/W 16mm Silent
A parking attendant directs the arriving vehicles. There is then a parade of cattle and horses, sheep in pens, a dog show, a children’s fancy dress competition, a gymkhana, and a parade of beautiful horse drawn wagons.

813 REAPER BINDER
?? 1952
0.75 min Colour 16mm Silent
Pleasant rural harvest scenes in a field with a few houses and farm buildings in the background.

814 SKEGNESS SCENES
Skegness 1952
2.25 min B/W & Colour 16mm Silent
Brief street scenes and a cafe interior in B/W, followed in colour by further street scenes general views, and scenes at the swimming pool.

815 STEAM PLOUGHING
?? c 1952
1 min B/W 16mm Silent
Very satisfying footage with plenty of good close-ups of one of the engines, showing the mechanism and cable drum, with clear views of the plough being hauled each way across the field.

816 SNOW SCENES
Spilsby/Horncastle area c 1952
4.75 min B/W 16mm Silent
Attractive and historically informative footage from the days when winters were winters. We see various different snow ploughs clearing the roads, cars travelling between high snow banks, gritting lorries with and without mechanical spreaders, and a dog exploring this strangely unfamiliar landscape. The item ends with snow scenes in Spilsby Market Place.

817 EAST COAST FLOODS
East Coast 1953
8 min B/W 16mm Silent
A useful source of material to use in conjunction with our other holdings on this subject. There is strong emphasis on the role of slag (brought in by endless lines of lorries) in making repairs to sea walls and roads and filling the ‘Acre Gap’. Some of the damage is well illustrated, though perhaps less compellingly than in our other footage of this event.

818 WINTERTON HORSE SHOW
Winterton (nr Scunthorpe) 1969
19.75 min Colour Super 8mm Silent
Working and riding horses are paraded round the ring, one of the latter proving dramatically recalcitrant. There is also some show jumping and a tour of the field by mounted riders including children. Spectators remain unseen.
Note: Some scenes were taken with a slow running camera and require speed correction.
[See also note below.]

819 PETERBOROUGH SHOW
Peterborough c 1969
23 min Colour Super 8mm Silent
People in Edwardian costume are seen on foot and parading on carts and carriages. There is a parade of working horses, followed by trotting races and show jumping. Further parades feature carriage and pairs, and more working horses. [See note below.]

820 HORSES AT LINCS & PETERBOROUGH SHOWS
Lincoln/Peterborough 1974
20 min Colour Super 8mm Silent
Brewers’ drays, cattle and sheep, a traction engine, and various horses. [See note below.]

Note about Nos 818, 819, 820
These three items are unstructured, unedited, and tediously repetitive. As they stand, they are not programme material, but they provide a rich source of pleasing individual scenes.
