510 FARMING AT BILLINGHAY
Billinghay c1965
55 min Colour Silent Super 8mm
A year on a large arable farm. Scenes of ploughing, drilling wheat, potato planting etc, and the ensuing harvests. Typical subject matter, but notable for clear organisation, well constructed sequences and effective use of detail.

511 FARMING AT SIBSEY
Sibsey (Nr Boston) late 1950s, early 1960s
38 min Colour Silent Std 8mm
Typical scenes on a mixed farm not yet fully mechanised. Useful material of hoeing, pea-vining, and planting / harvesting potatoes by hand. Much else of interest, too, though items appear at random.

512 AVELING BARFORD
Grantham & District 1960s & 70s
110 min Colour Silent 16mm
A large collection of out-takes and unused material originally shot for publicity purposes, much of it filmed during the firm’s last major expansion which occurred, ironically, only a year or two before its effective demise.
Originally famed for their road rollers, Aveling Barford also produced a wide range of other civil engineering plant.
For convenience and various technical reasons the material has been organised into four sections:

Part One: (1978) Scenes (interior and exterior) at the Grantham factory. These give a good general impression of a wide range of heavy engineering processes – a hydraulic forging press, drilling, boring, and fly-cutting machines, gear cutting, computer-aided design, and final assembly. The overall size of the Works is emphasised by some effective general views. [33 minutes]

Part Two: (early to mid 1970s) The Super 500 Grader in use for motorway construction and at other typical sites, (not all in Lincolnshire) with emphasis on its versatility and ability to cope with difficult terrain. [25 minutes]

Part Three: (early to mid 1970s) Tractor Shovels of two sizes are seen working with a range of different materials at a variety of sites (not all in Lincolnshire). With a grab in place of the bucket, the tractor shovel also handles felled tree trunks. [26 minutes]

Part Four: (early 1960s) Miscellaneous
a) Scenes at a large quarry (location unknown) with dumper trucks, mechanical shovels and tractor shovels. A large rock crushing plant is shown in considerable detail, and a small batching plant is also seen.
b) Miniature tractor shovels marketed as ‘Calfdozers’ are shown moving broken glass or slate, and a modified fork lift truck fitted with special grabs is at work in a timber yard.
c) A Super 500 Grader modified for use as a snow plough grapples with huge drifts in Norway. [26 minutes]

Note: A 00 minute show version is available, including the best of the factory material and some representative scenes from the other sections. This also provides a useful introductory overview of the material for quick assessment.

513 GUINNESS TV ADVERTISEMENT
Grimsby early 1960s?
0.5 min B/W Sound 16mm
One of a series in which men doing tough jobs relax afterwards with Guinness. This one features a Grimsby trawlerman. Hardly a worthwhile source of fishing footage, but an amusing curiosity.

514 MAKING PRODUCE CRATES
Pinchbeck (nr Spalding) c1985
3.5 min Colour Silent Super 8mm
A small family business producing disposable crates for cauliflower, celery etc. Wooden slats are placed by hand into jigs on a conveyor belt, and then stapled together to form the sides and bases. Finally, the crates are assembled from these by fastening them to cardboard end pieces.

515 SEASCAPES
Grimsby, North & Barents Seas  1966 – 68
36.5 min  Colour  Silent  Std 8mm
Fishing scenes on board the Grimsby trawlers ‘Revenge’, ‘Rodney’ and ‘Renown’.  There are the usual shots of hauling in the nets, releasing the catch, and big waves breaking over the bows, plus seascapes filmed over the side showing other vessels, ice floes, a Norwegian fishing port, etc.  Many pictorially striking scenes, though the material is somewhat repetitive.

516 RISEHOLME FARM INSTITUTE OPEN DAY
Lincoln,  c 1955
5.5 min  B/W  Silent  16mm
This shows the Farm Institute (later re-named Lindsey Agricultural College) in its relatively early and unsophisticated days.  Visitors are taken round sitting on straw bales on the backs of lorries, and the main attraction seems to be a display of lawn mowers.  It rains a lot.  There are no interior scenes, though an exhibition has been arranged under the arches along one side of the house.

517 DRAINING THE FENS
South Holland District  1949/1950s
9.5 min  B/W  Sound  16mm
Very good period footage of wildfowling with a punt-gun, rural flood scenes, and the digging and maintainance of dykes, though there is little on pumping, and nothing on land drains.  This version was made for schools in the early 1950s, combininging footage from the 1949 COI film ‘Fenlands’ with special educational graphics.

518  GRASS TRACK RACING
Sleaford 1965
6 min  Colour  Silent  Std 8mm
The first event of its kind in the area.  It was organised by the Sleaford Round Table (whose Chairman hands out the prizes) and the venue is ‘Boiling Wells’ Farm between Rauceby and Sleaford.  The cars are modified saloon cars rather than stock cars.  There is plenty of action and a compelling sense of being right in the midst of it.  Guest of honour (spectating, not participating) is Donald Campbell, who would die in ‘Bluebird’ on Coniston Water just over a year later (Jan 1967).  He is seen clearly several times.

Note:  A 4 min edited Show version is also available

519 STEAM RALLY
Carrington  1965
5.5 min  Colour  Silent  Std 8mm
Typical scenes of traction engines, both full-size and models; also fairground roundabouts, steam yachts, helter-skelter and a vintage fire engine.

520  FIRE AT SMEETONS
Sleaford  1969
5 min  Colour  Silent  Std 8mm
Scenes outside Smeetons shop in Sleaford Market Place, with numerous fire engines, firemen, hoses and breathing apparatus.    No flames are seen, and it appears that the fire has already been brought under control.  Some of the firemen chat and joke, drink tea, etc, bystanders look on as sodden office records are salvaged, traffic is diverted, and life returns to normal.
