481-500

481 TERRITORIAL ARMY CAMP
Weybourn? (Norfolk) 1957 c
17.5 min Colour & B/W Silent 16mm
Colour segment is chiefly concerned with assembly, maintenance and firing of light anti-aircraft guns, both singly and in groups. The B/W segment includes a splendid Cookhouse sequence, also coverage of the sports.

Note: Some scenes disfigured by gate dirt.

482 TERRITORIAL ARMY CAMP
Bude (Cornwall) 1959
29 min Colour Silent 16mm
The firing and maintenance of light anti-aircraft guns; fly-past by various aircraft; numerous general scenes, showing prayers, parades, inspections, etc; sports and a football match; and a light-hearted sequence showing the kitting out of a new recruit.

Note: Whilst containing much that is of interest, this material appears somewhat haphazard and of a lower technical standard than the other TA Camp films.

483 FREEDOM OF SCUNTHORPE FOR T.A. REGIMENT
Scunthorpe 1960
4 min Colour Silent 16mm
Official presentation ceremony, inspection by the Mayor, and march-past.

484 TERRITORIAL ARMY MOBILE CAMP
Sennybridge (Wales) 1960
9 min Colour Silent 16mm
The emphasis in this film is on transport and communications. Many scenes of army vehicles, towing of guns, signals equipment, etc.

485 FREEDOM OF HULL FOR T.A. REGIMENT
Hull 1960
5.5 min Colour Silent 16mm
Official presentation ceremony, inspection by the Mayor, and march-past.

486 FREEDOM OF GRIMSBY FOR T.A. REGIMENT
Grimsby 1961
9 min Colour Silent 16mm
Official presentation ceremony, inspection by the Mayor, and march-past. [Of the three broadly similar items (483, 485, 486) this seems the most pleasing.]

487 T.A. CHRISTMAS DINNER
Hull? 1961 c
2 min Colour Silent 16mm
By long tradition, the officers serve the men – and women. All present clearly find the harsh lighting intrusive, and filming conditions were less than ideal, but this item is nevertheless of interest, not least as a reminder that the TA wasn’t an exclusively male preserve.

488 A SENSE OF URGENCY (T.A. CAMP)
Manorbier (Wales) 1961
7.25 min Colour Silent 16mm
The official brief was that training must inculcate ‘A sense of urgency’ and the film’s light hearted response includes a breakneck drive to the camp, radar scanners gone mad, and other simple trick-work. But normal events at the camp are also included.

489 A FANFARE OF TRUMPETS (T.A.)
Hull 1964
8 min Colour Silent 16mm
The unveiling and dedication of a memorial plaque to the East Riding Volunteers at Holy Trinity Church, November 1st 1964. Those on parade include the T.A., veterans and cadets.

490 TERRITORIAL ARMY MOBILE CAMP
Warcop & Otterburn (Durham/N’thumbld) 1964
17.5 min Colour & B/W Silent 16mm
Mainly concerned with transport, signals, and the general mechanism of deployment. Good vehicle scenes, including night-time and fog, running repairs, breakdown recovery, etc. A few scenes of firing, and a tented camp.

491 TERRITORIAL ARMY CAMP
Penally & Manorbier (Wales) 1965
15.5 min Colour Silent 16mm
General scenes including handling of ammunition, practice firing at target towed by plane, etc. Also a pleasing trick sequence in which an engineer withdraws a vast quantity of items from a tiny toolbox, and a running gag about a recruit who is made to walk to the camp and finally arrives footsore and weary just as the others are packing up to go home.

492 FIFTEEN DAYS (T.A. CAMP)
Unknown 1966
11.5 min Colour Silent 16mm
The last TA camp before disbandment, hence the valedictory conclusion. Mainly features transport. Guns are seen being aimed without firing. (The film from Gun cameras would subsequently enable the accuracy to be assessed.)

493 BACKGROUND TO ANCHOR
Scunthorpe 1971 c
24 min Colour Sound 16mm
A British Steel Film made during the building of the huge new Anchor steel works, with emphasis on the careful planning done to take account of the likely impact on jobs, the locality, etc. A few scenes of construction in progress, and a short sequence showing steel production, but mainly ‘talking heads’, discussions, meetings, and vox pops, including one hostile reaction doubtless included for the sake of balance.

494 GRIMSBY CHAMBER OF TRADE OUTING
Sutton on Sea 1932 c
6 min B/W (tinted) Silent 16mm
Inexpertly shot item of little interest except to the participants, but not without its moments, e.g. the sight of prominent businessmen and their wives, impeccably dressed, disporting themselves on the swings. Also, the film pre-dates the opening of the pleasure gardens in 1938 [See No 077] and the contrast is striking.

495 SLEAFORD COUNTY SECONDARY SCHOOL
Sleaford 1960
23 min B/W Silent 16mm
A wide variety of scenes at this mixed secondary school, (now St George’s College of Technology). Amongst the most striking are the Domestic Science class with the girls in little caps and aprons being taught to make rock cakes; the School Farm, where the boys learn to plough and manage livestock; the metal workshop complete with forge; and a make-up demonstration for the girls. Special occasions include Prizegiving, Swimming and Athletic sports, Harvest Festival, and a Church Service for the whole school. Outdoor art classes, pottery making, the Choir and Orchestra, the Library, Netball, Football and the School Office all feature, as does the 8.30 a.m. arrival of children and teachers, one of whom drives up jauntily in a bubble car.

496 THE LEVERTON PEA CUTTER
Spalding & District 1953
17 min Colour Silent 16mm
The new Pea Cutter and Corn Swather is first displayed at the Broad Street yard, and is then seen working alonside rivals at a field demonstration for local farmers. Later, it tackles a variety of crops in earnest. Its predecessor, the ‘Torpedo’ is also seen.

Note: A 9 min edited version of 496 is also available.

497 BARROWBY CHURCH FÊTE (1954)
Barrowby (Nr Grantham) 1954
7.75 min Colour Silent 16mm
Rain clearly proved dispiriting though the event was well-attended, and featured Fancy Dress, bowling, pin-ball, hoopla, and the usual variety of stalls.

498 BARROWBY CHURCH FÊTE (1955)
Barrowby (Nr Grantham) 1955
14.5 min Colour Silent 16mm
Fine weather made this a much more bouyant occasion. Preparations include a lively ‘sewing bee’, and on the day itself there is everything from Country Dancing to Bowling for a Pig. Using scissors blindfold, visitors try to cut down an unusual prize – a cockerel; the children give a marching display and dance round a (portable) maypole weaving the ribbons into the traditional patterns, and of course there are teas in the Rectory Garden. A film of great social interest, depicting what is surely the quintessential Church Garden Fete.

499 SPALDING NATURE RESERVE
Spalding 1967/8
5.5 min Colour Silent 16mm
Excavating the pond in Pearson’s Field with drag-line and dumper truck, followed by early scenes of the Reserve along the banks of the Coronation Channel, well before the by-pass and residential developments altered the skyline.

500 TRENTSIDE PANORAMA
Gainsborough, R. Trent etc 1938
20 min B/W Silent 16mm
Dramatic footage of the Trent aegir passing various locations between Butterwick and Gainsborough. Also featured are the Beckingham shipyard (where several barges etc are seen being launched) and various river craft, mainly strings of barges towed by tugs, but including one sailing barge. A stern-sculled ferryboat is also seen.
