Old and new methods. First, the crop is harvested in the traditional way, with the vines brought back to a stationary thresher in the yard. Then we see the new mobile self-contained harvester in the fields. A small aeroplane is also seen spraying crops.

Unedited but professionally shot side trawler fishing scenes, with striking close-ups of fish in nets, crew members, iced-over deck fittings,etc. Attractive and often quite dramatic footage.

A Hull side-trawler, St Dominic, at work in the Norwegian, Barents and White Seas. Good fishing scenes, with a well-written narration which explains exactly what is going on and names all the various items of equipment. An excellent introduction for the layman. There are also good scenes of the catch being unloaded at Hull fish dock. (BBC Documentary).

Excellent scenes aboard the Joseph Conrad showing every aspect of the trawlermen’s life at sea, with the voice-over built up entirely from comments by the men themselves. Pictorial quality is sometimes compromised by the limitations of colour photography at the time, but the overall effect is impressive. (BBC Documentary).

A deckie learner is taught the rules of safety at sea, first in the classroom at college, then on board a Ross training ship. Plenty of visual interest, but the film is avowedly instructional, and unlike Deckie Learner (No 375) it stays fairly remote from its central character.
