OTC Parade in the school yard. Older boys march past the headmaster. Some much younger cadets, aged about 12, are also seen on parade. A few scenes on the school field follow, with running and high jump. One brief street scene at the end.

324 A WALK BY GRANTHAM CANAL

Outing by Grantham Kodak Fellowship along the banks of the canal. Main interest is the former swing bridge over the canal, which is seen clearly from several angles, both stationary and in motion. No canal boats are shown, but the costume of those on the outing is of some social interest.

The Sutton St James fete, a good humoured but modest affair, takes place in a field, with a few simple side shows, and stalls improvised from planks and bulb boxes. Main feature is a parade of floral decorated hats. The Long Sutton Agricultural Show was once a major local event; the film shows visitors circulating amongst the Trade stands. Exhibitors have clearly come from a wide area.

(1961) Playtime in the school yard, then P.E. and Art classes, also in the yard. (1962) Children in party hats greet Father Christmas in the street outside; further shots in the yard as they leave for home. (The building, in Wharf Street, has since been demolished.)

During the severe winter of 1963, the river froze solid. People are seen walking across the ice. The film concludes with views taken as the thaw was beginning.

Events at the Peele Secondary School include three Annual Boys’ Cross-Country races, two Sports Days with track and field events for both boys and girls, and the inauguration of the new outdoor swimming pool. A woodwork lesson is also seen in progress.

Trawlers at sea, with scenes filmed on board as the catch is hauled in and sorted. Later, the boats are shown returning to port. One of them, the Pharos, registered in 1901, was lost in 1906. Remarkable early footage by an intrepid photographer prepared to operate a hand-turned camera on the swaying deck of a trawler at sea.

Scenes at the Lincoln Bus Depot. After inspecting a damaged bus, mechanics play football in their dinner hour. Later scenes show various types of bus at the depot and in the streets. Finally, with air-raid shelters in the background, passengers board a bus specially decorated to celebrate VJ Day.

Family holiday footage in the usual locations. Other scenes include Carnival floats, the zoo, and a trampoline/trapeze display by The Flying Potters, a family acrobatic team.

The Zoo entrance, followed by many good close-ups of caged animals pacing to and fro. Nowadays, their cramped conditions would be considered an outrage.

Mainly of interest for its street scenes, taken early in the season, and showing old buses, charabancs, etc. The beach, swimming pool, gardens and boating lake are sparsely populated.

334 SKEGNESS BEACH

Family scenes on an almost deserted beach, with everyone grimly determined to enjoy themselves. The children play in the sand but keep their pullovers on. Later, everyone goes paddling, including granny dressed in her best hat and fox fur.

335 HARVEST AT SCOPWICK

A Claas Combine is seen at work in the fields, with close-ups of its main features. It is said to have been the first of these remarkably compact machines imported into the UK from Germany after the war, and the manufacturer’s son who brought it over is seen riding on top of it. Later, the farmer’s own son, aged 7, drives the tractor and trailer round the field, to collect the grain sacks and straw bales. The interior of the Drier shed is also seen.

Sheep are fed in a field; pigs and piglets are fed in an outbuilding, and harvesting is seen in progress. Colour scenes include a hay baler at work, and various attempts by inexpert town-dwellers to feed the lambs.

Note: The Picture House, now demolished, was Grantham’s first purpose-built cinema, and this is the oldest known motion picture footage to feature it.
